Pool on a slope: The biggest challenge wasn't the slope

A pool on a sloped site is often considered a complicated and expensive solution. After going through the process ourselves, we think the reality is much more interesting. What worked, what we would do differently today, and why we eventually threw away an €2,500 winter cover and replaced it with simple timber boards.

Black bathroom

A black bathroom can look dramatic, elegant, and serene all at once. But as with most bold interiors, it’s the lighting, materials, and how the space is used that really make the difference. And that’s precisely where the difference lies between a bathroom that works perfectly and one that starts to feel like a burden after just a few months.

Home renovation vs. New construction

Renovating a house is often seen as a more affordable way to own a home. However, the renovation itself isn’t necessarily cheaper. The difference often lies not in the cost of the walls, but in the location, the character of the house, the size of the lot, or the vision of an ideal life—a vision that new construction can quickly inflate.

Milan 2026: less design, more funfair

How wonderful it would have been this year if we’d arrived in Milan a week later. After several years, we returned to the Salone del Mobile itself—and we understood why Milan had seemed much more pleasant to us back then, without the fair. Instead of seeking inspiration, this year we often found ourselves standing in lines, amid the installations and crowds of people who hadn’t come for the furniture, but for the very atmosphere of Design Week.

Retro Bathroom: How to Design it so it works today

A retro bathroom is not about going back in time. It’s about working with what already works – materials, proportions and light – and using it in a contemporary way. It works best where there is context: in a villa, a country house, a barn or an industrial space.

When to Start Designing a House Interior

Designing a home’s interior doesn’t begin once construction is complete and it’s time to furnish it. Interior design starts much earlier—ideally even before construction on a new home begins. That’s when decisions are made that can’t be changed later on—decisions that determine whether the house will be functional or just look good from the outside.

Why a house design isn't enough

A house can be architecturally brilliant. Clean lines, good proportions, a well-thought-out form. From the outside, everything looks just right. And then you step inside—and something feels off. Not because the house’s design is bad, but because no one really followed through on the interior design.

Barn Renovation

Converting a barn isn’t a cheap shortcut to a home. But if you’re looking for a house with character, generous space, and a strong atmosphere, a barn might just be one of the most interesting options. What’s worth preserving, what should you watch out for, and when should you even consider taking on such a renovation?

We won Ape Grupo Architecture Award

One November day, we got an unexpected phone call inviting us to take part in the Ape Grupo Architecture Awards. Competitions have never really been our thing, and we usually steer clear of them. Our first — and for a long time also our last — competition was the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo with Martin Roubík, where we placed somewhere between 4th and 7th. We realised that the whole competition scene just wasn’t something we enjoyed, so we politely turned down every invitation that followed. But Ape wouldn’t take no for an answer, and by the third phone call I finally gave in and said yes. We weren’t expecting anything to come of it.
