Glass partition: When you want to divide a space without losing light

A glass partition is more than just a design feature – it’s a bridge between openness and privacy, between lightness and functionality. Whether it separates a walk-in closet in a bedroom, a bathroom in a loft, or creates a subtle boundary between a living room and a workspace, its purpose is to connect the space rather than divide it. Glass partitions are an ideal solution for home renovations where you need to divide the layout efficiently while still preserving a sense of openness and light.

Why choose a glass partition during a renovation?

Glass partitions have the ability to visually enlarge a space, let light flow through, and still provide the level of privacy you need. In our projects—whether it’s an apartment renovation or a house renovation—we use them wherever we want to maintain an airy, open feel while clearly defining functional zones. Whether it’s a bathroom, a walk-in closet, or a small workspace, glass is a material that meets all these requirements.

How we do it

In our projects, glass partitions have become an integral part of the design. We use them, for example, to separate a workspace from the living room without losing the sense of openness. In bathrooms, glass partitions create a visual connection to the bedroom while still preserving privacy. These solutions are often part of apartment renovations, where the goal is to transform the space into something modern, functional, and visually pleasing.

Industrial-style glass partitions

We often use what are known as industrial-style partitions—glass panels set into frames. Unlike the frameless office partitions you commonly see, we focus on subtle, slim profiles that feel light and elegant within the space. And that can be a bit of a challenge—finding the right supplier for such refined profiles isn’t easy, but luckily, we have one!

Types of glass for glass partitions

Glass partitions can vary widely in materials as well. Besides classic clear glass, we particularly like:

Ribbed glass – This option is ideal for maintaining privacy. It still allows light to pass through but prevents visibility, making it perfect for areas where discretion is needed, such as bedrooms or bathrooms.
Smoked glass – Smoked glass has the advantage of eliminating the unwanted greenish tint that clear glass can sometimes have. Crystal glass avoids this issue too, but it’s far too costly for everyday use.

You can find a wide selection of flat glass at SIO2.

Glass partitions in living spaces

In living rooms where we separate a workspace or a guest room, we often add a curtain in front of the glass. This element not only enhances the aesthetic but also adds flexibility—the curtain can be drawn to instantly change the function of the space whenever needed. Solutions like this are very popular in house renovations, where different zones need to be created without losing the overall sense of openness.

A partition or a screen for the shower?

Another great use of glass partitions is in shower screens. Instead of standard shower enclosures, we create full-height glass panels, which eliminates the need for complicated metal frames and tracks that tend to deteriorate with water. We focus on simple glazing, positioned cleverly so that water stays inside without the need for doors. This minimalist approach fits perfectly into modern design and ensures both functionality and aesthetics—an ideal solution for bathroom renovations that call for a clean and simple look.

For our shower screens, we prepare a concealed track directly in the ceiling recess, so the glass can simply be slid into place, creating a very clean appearance. All structural elements remain hidden, resulting in a minimalist design with no visible frames or metal details. This approach is ideal wherever attention to detail and a clean, modern look are essential.

Our specialty: One door for both the shower and the toilet

One of our unique solutions is the spatial layout of the shower and toilet within the bathroom. We place these two zones in separate niches next to each other and use a single sliding door. This door can easily be moved to close either the shower or the toilet, depending on what’s needed. The shower is designed to be the same size as the toilet, which saves space while ensuring both functionality and comfort.

Glass partitions as an optical barrier

A glass partition can also serve as an optical barrier. We used this technique, for example, in our Vanguard project, where we incorporated glass blocks in a steel frame within the wellness area of the changing rooms. This element creates an industrial look and effectively divides the space without fully enclosing it. Glass blocks are an excellent choice for anyone looking to separate a space while still maintaining openness and natural light.

How to properly plan the installation of a glass partition

It’s important to consider glass partitions already during the planning phase of the entire project. Proper installation requires preparing suitable ceiling anchors and avoiding underfloor heating in areas where it might complicate the mounting process. Did you know that even the dimensions can be a limiting factor? It’s not just about the production size—it's also about whether the glass can physically be brought into the space. We often calculate stairway clearances, door rotations, and other logistical details.

You also need to think about the door swing to avoid collisions with furniture, ceiling lights, or other elements. This step is essential, especially in apartment and house renovations, where every part of the interior must be carefully considered.

Our tips:

  • Fixed glass shower panel – If your space allows it, avoid sliding or hinged shower screens. It will make cleaning much easier.
  • Smoked glass – A great option if you find the greenish tint of standard clear glass unappealing.
  • Curtain in front of the partition – Don’t be afraid to use textiles in ways other than on windows. A curtain in front of a glass partition provides privacy and adds warmth to the space.
  • Beware of underfloor heating – Plan ahead to avoid installation complications.
  • Measure twice, install once – Make sure the glass panel can actually be brought into your space.
