JIŘÍHO Z PODĚBRAD apartment

We designed this Vinohrady apartment as a precise balance between a classical base and contemporary minimalism. Within a developer-built shell, we defined the layout, surfaces and all key interior elements from the start, pushing the standard framework toward something much more specific. Panelled doors, decorative plasterwork, timber flooring, a marble kitchen and a marble bathroom all bring in the essence of a proper Vinohrady apartment, while clean lines, strict geometry and restrained furnishings keep it firmly in the present. The result is our own version of a Vinohrady whipped cream interior — classic at its core, but stripped of nostalgia and unnecessary decoration.

The fireplace as a focal point

The living room is defined by a fireplace with a strong stone surround. Its shape is deliberately geometric, which is exactly why it works so well against the more decorative plaster details on the walls and ceiling. The furniture was composed as a set of distinct standalone pieces: a softly curved sofa, a sharper wooden armchair and low circular tables in darker materials. The whole room is tied together by a pendant light suspended on a leather strap, giving the space a clear contemporary accent.

A marble kitchen without compromise

The kitchen is built around a substantial marble island. Choosing the stone was one of the most demanding parts of the entire project, because the white had to be exact — with no trace of grey or yellow undertones. Samples literally travelled across the world before we confirmed the final choice. But the kitchen does not rely on classicism alone. The lower cabinets are finished in hot-rolled steel with a dark wax coating, a protected surface with a soft, almost velvety feel that brings the right amount of contrast. The tall cabinetry is calmer, with a ribbed detail that softens the composition. The kitchen opens into a dining area with a large oval table, black chairs and light smoked-glass pendant lights.

Everything that does not belong in the main salon

The private lounge works as a TV room, guest room and a quieter retreat away from the main living area. It contains everything we did not want to bring into the formal living room. Instead of a television, there is a projection screen cleverly concealed behind the ceiling moulding, with the projector integrated into the cabinetry. The dividing wall is formed by a large custom-built storage piece with steel shelving, which also acts as a threshold into the next part of the apartment.

Sauna and dark stone

The wellness bathroom is centred around a sauna. A sauna in a Vinohrady apartment is hardly a standard feature in a developer project, but here it made complete sense. To create a calm and focused atmosphere, we chose a dark large-format surface with a marble-like pattern. The shower and toilet are closed off by a single sliding door, which can shut either one or the other depending on the situation. It is a solution we like for its simplicity and visual clarity.

The bedroom behind the dressing room

The bedroom is bright, soft and calmer than the rest of the apartment. An upholstered bed, softer textiles and a statement pendant light create a composed but understated space. It is separated from the corridor by a dressing room designed as an open steel-framed system. Steel also appears on the drawer fronts, so this part of the apartment continues the same material language as the rest of the interior. The practical layer is placed between circulation and rest, allowing the bedroom itself to remain clean and quiet.

Marble bathroom

The main bathroom is built almost entirely around marble. The marble bathroom was one of the key motifs of the entire apartment from the beginning, and strong enough to stand as a theme in its own right. Here, the clients persuaded us to use under-counter sinks — a feature we do not often choose, but one that felt exactly right in this case and gave the room a subtle retro note. The freestanding black bathtub works as a strong contrasting object. The shape of the sinks corresponds with the mirrors, and the storage is integrated directly into the wall so that nothing unnecessary remains visible.

Doors, handles, proportions

The corridor shows most clearly how much attention we gave to the panelled detailing, plaster decoration and the precise shaping of each opening. We refined both the glazed doors leading into the living spaces and the solid doors to the service areas and bedrooms so that the whole apartment would keep a consistent rhythm. The execution of the doors was especially important — we specified the production of the panelled doors in great detail so they would not feel decorative, but like a natural architectural part of the interior. We paid the same level of attention to the handles. Instead of a nostalgic detail, we chose a strictly geometric design with a long backplate reaching almost to the floor. This contrast between a classical foundation and contemporary precision is essential to the whole apartment.
