Custom steel mailbox wall at Vanguard Prague in the context of the full lobby with the massive concrete reception desk — exposed industrial elements of the conversion

VANGUARD reception desk

The reception at Vanguard was designed as part of the conversion of the former Microna factory into contemporary housing. Into the original lobby we inserted a massive concrete casting, custom steel elements and exposed technical structures that continue the industrial history of the building. The shared spaces were designed so the rawness of the original architecture would not disappear, but instead become the defining element of the entire project.

One massive casting

The dominant feature of the space is a reception desk made from a massive concrete casting. Instead of pouring the concrete into traditional formwork, we cast it directly into a bag that defined the final shape. The result is an authentic object marked by deformations, folds and traces of the casting process itself. No fake concrete finish applied onto a prepared structure, but one enormous concrete mass combined with a steel plate. We kept the entire space as open and exposed as possible—visible ceilings, exposed cable trays, technical installations and reinforced concrete beams. The hardness of the materials is softened by pendant lights resembling drops, suspended on leather straps that bring a lighter and more delicate layer into the space. The industrial architecture remains fully exposed in every detail.

Rawness as part of the architecture

The reception also includes the main mailboxes for all residential units. We designed them as one monolithic wall made from custom-fabricated steel sheets. Hidden within the same steel wall are storage spaces for the reception itself, keeping all technical functions invisible. Connected to the reception is the concierge office—a simple space finished with a bold colored plaster contrasting with the rawness of the shared areas. We used the same principle around the elevators, where rough plaster intentionally stands against the clean stainless steel surfaces. We managed to convince the investor that this roughness and exposed technical aesthetic are exactly what give the entire factory conversion its authentic character.
