VANGUARD Loft Interior
The loft was designed as an investment property intended for sale. With no specific owner or lifestyle to design for, we focused on the layout, built-in furniture, materials and lighting. Freestanding furniture was kept to a minimum. This makes the loft appear emptier in the photographs, but also reveals its true scale.
The larger floor plan allowed us to move all the service spaces into one corner and leave the main living area as open as possible. The bathroom, storage and staircase leading to the sleeping platform are concentrated in a single volume. The rest of the loft belongs to the high ceilings, exposed concrete and views through the fully glazed façade.
A black kitchen with a charred surface
This time, we did not compose the black kitchen from smooth surfaces alone. The cabinet fronts and wall panels have a pronounced texture that works across large areas and changes with the light. Instead of conventional black-stained veneer, we used charred timber with an almost coal-like appearance.
The dark stone is equally expressive, with a deeply textured surface and contrasting pale veining. It covers the worktop, splashback and kitchen island, which extends into a dining counter. Brass appears on the sink, tap and smaller metal details. It does not soften the black. It simply prevents it from looking flat.
An open space without a cube in the middle
In the VANGUARD show loft, the central service volume also concealed a retractable staircase. Here, the larger floor plan allowed us to move the entire volume into a corner. This created enough room for a full staircase while leaving the main space open for the living and dining area.
As the loft was intended for sale, we did not design a complete set of freestanding furniture for a particular client. We concentrated on the elements that would remain: the built-in furniture, kitchen, staircase, lighting and spatial arrangement. The living area continues through the glazed façade onto a large terrace. The amount of daylight and the open view allowed us to use so much black without making the interior feel heavy.
A brass basin instead of decoration
The bathroom follows the same combination of black and brass used in the show loft. This time, however, the brass takes a more prominent role in the form of a metal basin. It is not a detail you discover later. It is the first thing you notice.
Large-format dark tiles, black frames, mirrors and charred timber provide a restrained background. The brass basin and tap are the only colour accent the room needs.
